Goa-based Craft Beer Brand Maka di Just Dropped Their Beers, and They Are Truly Out of This World!

People love beer. That’s why it’s the world’s third most widely consumed beverage.

People also love traveling. Some even say it has the power to change your entire life.

But there is something to be said for traveling thousands of miles to another world solely in search of great-quality beer.

Like anything else in this world: be it cuisine, music or even architecture – the tastes and traditions of locally brewed craft beer can vary wildly from country to country, state to state. And the modern-day beer lover is dead set on experiencing them all.

Taking cue from this, a Goa-based brand called Maka di – fronted by an astronaut who can be seen spanning the great galaxies for great beers along the way – is all set to launch its range of exclusive craft beers. The brand comes from the house of Latambarcem Brewers – a company that brews and manufactures high-quality beverages including international quality craft beer that’s on par with the fabled European beers of Germany and Belgium with a strong emphasis on research, development and innovation.

Coined from the Konkani term “Maka di” which means “give me”, the brand echoes the internal cry of the new generation of beer lovers who are looking for beer that not only tastes extraordinary but also treads the path of creativity, sustainability and purpose.

Aditya Ishan Varshnei

Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, Latambarcem Brewers

“We have launched our international quality craft beers for the domestic market and are poised to meet our forthcoming international export commitments. The long term goal of the company is to build an infrastructure around beer that’s different from what is there in the market today.”

Anish Varshnei

Co-founder and Chief Production Officer, Latambarcem Brewers

“Craft, in my opinion, is not defined by size. A true craftsman always says “There are no boundaries”. We make truly great craft beer because we have no boundaries when it comes to ensuring quality based on innovation. Over the next few months, we aim to create recipes that have never existed in this world before out of combinations of ingredients that no one has dared to experiment with.”

The Maka di Story

Throughout history, humans as a race, have always been hardwired explorers. As Neanderthals, we curiously ventured into caves and navigated oceans. And then, centuries later, we made our mark on the moon.

There’s an undeniable thrill about pushing one’s limits, stepping out of one’s comfort zone and into the unknown and that’s exactly why craft beer – with its myriad styles and flavours, is both intriguing and alluring.

As such, by cleverly drawing a parallel between the dazzling world of craft and the vast expanse of outer space studded with never-before-seen treasures – Maka di speaks to the thirsty beer-loving explorer in all of us. The brand’s official mascot – an amicable interstellar traveller, can be seen drifting placidly through bespangled intergalactic landscapes, injected with whimsical elements that weave the story together. Sometimes, he can be seen bunjee-jumping with a handful of golden wheat – or drawing honey from a beehive that accidentally grew on a wandering satellite. The occasional use of rockets suggests that he was probably left behind – or that he’s simply content to hang ten as he rides the perfect “beer” wave.

Unchartered territories can be scary. But by conjuring up vivid imagery of what lies beyond the horizon, Maka di delivers just the right kind of push that gives people the courage to move away from the shore and paddle out into the mysterious ocean of craft beer.

“Each of our beer types is true to kind – as perfect as when they were first created in a different part of the world. What goes into our beer is vital to what the end product is. A large part of our planning has been focused on the procurement of the best malts and hops, sourced diligently from the U.S., Europe and other parts of the world for each of our beer types and we will always be consistent in this approach.” – Aditya Varshnei, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, Maka di

“You see, quality is paramount, which is why we call ourselves true craft. Which is why we are confident we will be capable of developing recipes exclusively for groups, organisations, etc.”– Anish Varshnei, Co-founder and Chief Production Officer, Maka di

Beer variants

Made with the best possible natural ingredients sourced from around the world and backed by sound, superior brewing technology with processes that are environmentally sensitive and community-focused, Maka di is kicking off its beer range with five exquisite variants.

1. Honey Ale

ABV: 7-8 percent

When it comes to brewing beer with honey, tossing helpings of the sticky sweetness haphazardly into any old beer never makes the cut. A delicate, thoughtful infusion of honey in a farmhouse ale, however, can conjure up a brew that’s both delectable and delicious! Honey has a way of making your beer smoother, thanks to its heavy sweetness: but a good recipe will also take advantage of honey’s second-best quality: that subtle hint of earthiness and floral dryness.

You can expect nothing less from Maka di’s Honey Ale.

A traditional amber ale injected with tonnes of wild honey, straight from the Jim Corbett National Park – Maka di’s honey ale is a balanced, full-bodied and subtly sweet on the tongue – reminding you of all things spring and summery!

2. American Lager

ABV: 4-5 percent

We’re living in the best of beer times when we are spoilt for so many choices and flavours. And yet, we often find ourselves circling back to the classic lager. From the very first sip, it is a harkening back to a time in your life when things were simpler, and drinking a chilled lager has a strange way of swathing you in sentimentality.

Maka di brings the universal lager to a local, bespoke craft brewery and recreates it using fresh citrus hops and two-row Pilsen malts. The result? An ultra-smooth, super clean, well-carbonated beer that reveals the slightest hints of citrus on the palate! Crisp, light and dripping with nostalgia, this style conjures up memories like those of your first drinking days or sharing that first beer with dad!

3. Belgian Tripel

ABV: 7-8 percent

A gift from the Trappist monks of Belgium – often considered as the OGs of modern brewing, this particular style of beer is known to be deceptively potent and is characterised by its signature deep golden colour and enticing drinkability.

If this sounds like your kind of beer, definitely give Maka di’s Belgium Tripel a shot. This beer is the lip-smacking result of a collaboration with the esteemed Belgium-based Brasserie Lupulus and is a contemporary take on this 90-year old traditional, Trappist-style recipe. Bursting with aromas from esters and hops, this heady beer is loaded with character and delivers the ultimate intoxicating high!

4. Belgian Wheat-Blanche

ABV: 4-5 percent

There are very few thirst-quenchers that offer the satisfaction of a Belgian witbier. Beyond its light and fluffy body, this top-fermented style of beer is characterised by a tart, citrus finish and a distinct layered aroma.

A rich, herby medley of coriander, cumin, Sicilian lemon and Valencia orange peels, Maka di’s Belgian Blanche is like summer’s bounty in a bottle. Textured with wheat and loaded with a boisterous, yeasty character – this alluring number oozes Belgian individuality while paying tribute to age-old brewing traditions.

Bavarian-Keller

5. The Bavarian Keller

ABV: 4-5 percent

Deep dive into Germany’s regal brewing history with this unfiltered, wonderfully hazy beer. This resurrected German lager is called ‘Kellerbier’- a name derived from the deep vaults and cellars in which this unfiltered beer was matured to get the temperature right.

The brewing recipe of this lager follows ‘Reinheitsgebot’ – the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516 which permits the strict usage of water, hops, malts and yeast as the only ingredients. Interestingly, it is the adherence to this law that gives you the perfect Bavarian Keller.

Undoubtedly, the fast-shifting brewing landscape demands an even deeper, more creative thinking – triggering beer drinkers from all over the world to simply drink better. Diversity is clearly key, as the quest for “something different” continues.

Brewing local beers for a global audience: that’s the Maka di dream. The brand takes the delicious, balmy joie de vivre of Goa and fuses it with the mysterious aromas from exotic foreign lands: bringing to the table a range of astronomically good beers that raise a fine toast to quality, culture and community.

Maka di’s beers are all set to hit shelves in Goa on 1st October. The brand will soon be expanding to other metros very soon. Follow Maka di at @we.are.maka to know when it arrives in your city!
